Eco Schools – Our Charity of the Year
This year we have chosen to work with Eco Schools as our charity of the year.
We have had the pleasure of working with our local primary school on our wildflower meadow last year, we had a lovely day preparing the soil and sowing the seeds as well as making bird feeders and eating biscuits!
Whilst we were working (and eating biscuits), we talked about the Eco School project they are involved with, the program consists of a 7 part pathway which leads the school to a Green Flag award scheme.
As every school is different, Eco Schools supports each one through their 7 part program with well structured resources and an information frameworks that suits all settings and situations.
Firstly the schools have to create an Eco-Committee, who then review the program and create an action plan on where they would like to focus their efforts, the school then create links from this to the curriculum and roll this out to the wider school population so everyone can get involved. This process is reviewed and reported on and then finally the school can create their Eco-Code which every pupil signs up to.
Once this is all done at the end of the school year, the school can apply for the Green Flag status to celebrate all their hard work which I am happy to say our local school has now received. The Green Flag status is valid for a year and can be renewed annually with proof that the 7 steps are still being adhered to and the school is progressing with their aims and objectives.
Eco Schools say
“Our programme aims to rally and unite young people to make realistic but dynamic change, creating positive impacts for our planet now.
We’re committed to working with educators to ensure our programme works for them, supporting them to teach young people the skills and knowledge needed to benefit and improve our planet throughout their lifetimes”.
We are so happy to be able to help the school to spread the word of lowering carbon footprints, saving water and keeping the wildlife safe in our local environment and what better way to do that then by supporting Eco Schools themselves.
