Friends of the Earth – Newbury Nature Corridors
We have been able to support our local Friends of the Earth group for a number of years now, and their latest project the Newbury Nature Corridor is 2 years into its development.
Stemming from the Lockdown Woods project started in 2020 the Newbury Nature Corridor was initially created to link 2 of the Lockdown Woods, with the 2.5 mile route passing through key landmarks like the Kennet and Avon Canal, City Rec, St Bartholomew’s School and both John Rankin Schools as well as many residential streets, gardens and wide verges.
The corridor has now been extended to cover 4 larger areas of Newbury comprising of 4 Nature Corridors, with individuals and local groups all joining Friends of the Earth to help create safe havens and richer habitats for all kind of flora and fauna.
Rivar have been able to supply donations of bark for mulching in new hedging in Wash Common, gravel for the rejuvenation of the ponds at St Bartholomew’s School and John Rankin Schools as well as various bags of scalpings and stones for other projects along the corridor.
There is still plenty to do along the Corridors and if you would like to get involved have a look at the Friends of the Earth Newbury Facebook page or have a look at the website for more information Newbury Friends of The Earth | Newbury | Environmental Group
Future plans include co-ordinating observation, monitoring and mapping of wildlife in the area, educational events and additionally continuing the involvement with both local councils so that they can collectively make more provision for nature in our town.
“We hope this project will involve many residents and children over many years as it evolves, teaching a love of nature and giving skills to care for our environment”
And we hope that we are able to continue to support the hard work that Friends of the Earth do!
