Growing Newbury Green
We are lucky to be in the position of being able to help many local charities and community groups, Growing Newbury Green is one of them!
Growing Newbury Green is a community initiative in Newbury, Berkshire, focused on planting fruit trees and edible crops to provide free, local food and enhance green spaces, this is all run and financed by a group of volunteers so when they asked for help with mulch for new saplings a few years ago we were happy to be able to help.
Established in 2012 the group have planted over 60 apple trees and other edible plants in public spaces and parks with the support of Newbury Town Council, making fresh local food accessible to the local area whilst promoting community engagement.
The planting and creating of these spaces are advertised and any support is welcome, so the orchards are created with the support and help of the people that will benefit from them, it is at these events that we are able to help with by donating mulch to protect the plants and keep the soil from frying out too much in dry weather.
These spaces aren’t the only events that Growing Newbury Green host, there are regular events that are planned by the group including pruning workshops, Wassail celebrations as well as the various planting and maintenance days. Some members also visit local schools to deliver pruning sessions to anyone who wants to learn, passing all the knowledge onto the next generations!
The main Orchards created by Growing Newbury Green are Barn Crescent, Digby Road & Sayers Close, Lock Island, Wash Common & Stroud Green and you can see their website www.growingnewburygreen.org.uk for more details on upcoming events!
