Thatcham Rocks!

Thatcham Rocks!

Thatchamrocks, communityspirit, arts and crafts

There is a new sport sweeping across the nation and #ThatchamRocks is the latest town to participate, it’s free, fun and addictive!

What is it and how can you join in?

Simply join the Facebook page “Thatcham Rocks” and paint some stones, there is plenty of inspiration on the page, from felt tip mark making to complete works of art that I would dread parting with if I had the talent to product such works of beauty, write #ThatchamRocks on it and you are ready to go.

There’s lots of advice on the page regarding what to use to paint your rock, nail varnish is popular as well as acrylic paint, sharpie pens, pencils, and felt tips, If you want to protect your stone against the elements you can seal with varnish, laquer, PVA glue or similar but it is not essential.

Then you go out and hide them, usually in plain sight so little ones can find them. Whilst you are out and about keep your eyes open for hidden rocks that other people have hidden too.

If you find one (and you should, there are plenty about), take a picture of it then re-hide it, usually nearby and post the picture to the Facebook page so the artist can see that it has been found, and where it has travelled to.

Keep browsing the page to see if your own works of art have been found!

My children and I have been out walking so much over the last few weeks on rock hunts, and the thrill when you see one….fantastic!!! You undoubtedly meet other rock hunters on your travels to compare finds with. It brings with it a real sense of community to our lovely town and a common interest to the people who live here, we have also found rocks from TadleyRocks, PortsmouthRocks and ColdAshRocks, which the children think is totally amazing!

The bit I love seeing is the creation of these little works of art, not only is it really relaxing sitting with the children painting rocks, but the variety of what is being created is amazing and inspiring.

Setting our little rocks free is lovely, knowing that the next person that comes along will see it as in invitation to join our Thatcham Rocks family, or it could be an old hand at this rock hiding business and will know exactly what to do with it.
