Autumn Jobs in the Garden

Autumn garden, jobs to do in the garden, what to do in the garden

Autumn jobs in the garden

Autumn is a busy time in the garden, you have enjoyed the fruits of your labour and now it is time to start putting the garden to bed so it can flourish again next year.

Here is a list of some jobs you can be getting on with.

Lawns

Rake leaves off of lawns, borders and paths. If you store them in sacks with a few air holes you will have the most amazing mulch to use next year.

Lawns that have become compacted can be spiked to let the air in.

Feed lawns with an autumn grass feed to help them recover from the strains of the summer.

Plant bulbs in your lawn for spring colour.

Plants

Take cuttings of woody herbs like Rosemary and Thyme.

Lift tender perennials like Canna's and store in a cool dry place over winter.

Plant your winter colour, good examples are Winter Flowering Pansy's, Cyclamen, Heather, Winter Aconites and Winter Jasmine.

Plant trees, shrubs and hedging whilst the soil is still warm.

Plant amaryllis bulbs for Christmas colour.

Vegetable Patch

Cloche soft salad plants to prolong harvest.

Sow into cold frames hardy vegetables like broad beans, peas and winter lettuce ready for an early spring harvest.

Sow outdoors autumn onion setts, garlic, spring cabbage, rhubarb and asparagus heads and lambs lettuce.

Sow green manure, this is an easy way to enrich your soil and keep weeds to a minimum and it looks good!

Maintenance jobs

Tidy and clean your greenhouse to prevent parasites taking hold.

Build a log pile for wildlife to over winter in.

Store hoses and spray guns so they don't freeze and split.

Clean out bird boxes to keep them parasite free and safe for next years chicks.

Gather in canes and pots that aren't being used to prolong their lives.

Go on a snail hunt, this will ensure numbers are at a minimum for next year without the use of pesticides.
