20mm Ballast

Also called “all in ballast” or “concreting ballast” this product is a blend of sand and gravel which is up to 20mm in size which is typically mixed with cement and water to make concrete.

As Dug Sand

Also called “fill sand”. Often used to cover cables and pipes laid in the ground. Some people use this product when blinding off an irregular surface to create a flatter finish.

Building Sand

Also called “soft sand”. When mixed with cement and water it makes mortar for bricklaying as well as being used to lay some types of paving slabs. Building sand can vary in colour which will effect the colour of the mortar produced. Please call our sales team to see what colour sands are available in your area.

Building Sand

Hoggin

A fill product of unprocessed sand and gravel mix ( as it has been dug out of the ground). It is still sometimes used for the base of driveways and patios but scalpings has largely replaced it.

Rejects

A large clean gravel which is often 40mm+ in size. Not very pretty to look at but is often used in drainage soakaways. Large rejects can be available which again are typically used for drainage of a fill material.

Scalpings

A 40mm down to dust limestone product which compacts down to form a hard base. Under most drives and patios you would lay a base of compacted scalpings before putting down a mix of sand and cement and then your paving or blocks.
If you are looking to fill potholes in a drive or pathway this is the product often used.

Sharp Sand

Also called “grit sand”. This is a blend of sand and small gravel which is often mixed with cement and water to lay some types of paving slabs on or create a floor screed.

Sharp Sand

Type 1

Like scalpings this is a product which compacts down to form a hard base. It will usually be more expensive than scalpings but can be more consistent in quality. Used on the roads and highways this product is tested to make sure a consistent quality is supplied.
